Ecological Restoration
Ecological restoration helps damaged ecosystems recover by rebuilding native plant communities and restoring ecological processes. A key part of restoration is reintroducing regionally appropriate native plants and seed to support biodiversity, wildlife habitat, and long-term ecosystem health.
Ecological Restoration & Native Seed Systems
St. Williams Nursery & Ecology Centre was founded with a focus on ecological restoration in Ontario. To support restoration projects across the province, we developed the conservation nursery as it is known today, growing native plants and collecting native seed for conservation initiatives, municipalities, parks, and restoration professionals.
Today, our work continues to evolve as our ecological restoration work is expanding in scale and complexity, focusing on seed-based solutions for large-scale projects. As St. Williams Ecology Centre, our team brings together expertise in native seed systems, ecological site assessment, restoration planning, and native plant propagation.
We work closely with conservation organizations, consultants, contractors, and municipalities to design restoration strategies that support biodiversity, strengthen native plant communities, and restore ecological function across the landscape.
Seed-Based Restoration Solutions
Healthy ecosystems depend on resilient native seed systems. Increasingly, restoration projects rely on regionally appropriate seed to restore grasslands, wetlands, forests, and other natural habitats.

Our team works directly with clients to develop seed-based restoration strategies tailored to the goals and ecological conditions of each project. This includes sourcing and producing native seed, designing site-appropriate seed mixes, and integrating planting and propagation where needed. We supply:
• Standard ecological seed mixes for common restoration applications
• Custom seed mixes tailored to project-specific conditions
• Native seed supply sourced through regional collection and production
• Native plant propagation for species that require nursery production
By combining seed supply with ecological expertise, we help ensure restoration materials are appropriate for the landscape and capable of supporting long-term ecosystem recovery.
Restoration Services
In addition to seed supply and propagation, we provide restoration services to support project implementation and long-term site success. Depending on project needs, our services may include:
Site Evaluation & Ecological Assessment
Baseline surveys, vegetation inventories, and site constraints analysis to guide restoration planning.
Site Preparation
Clearing, grading, soil preparation, and other site treatments including scarification, decompaction, and soil amendments.
Seeding & Planting
Installation of native seed mixes and planting of native trees, shrubs, and herbaceous species.
Invasive Species Management
Targeted removal of invasive plants and long-term strategies to support native species establishment.
Maintenance & Site Stewardship
Monitoring and tending activities such as mowing, irrigation, pest management, and prescribed burning where appropriate.
Project Planning & Coordination
Restoration planning, project management, costing support, and coordination with project partners.
Long-Term Restoration Planning
Operational training, stewardship guidance, and public education to support the ongoing success of restoration initiatives.
Landscape Restoration at Scale
Ecological restoration is increasingly being undertaken at landscape scales to address biodiversity loss, climate resilience, and watershed health. Our goal is to support this work by strengthening the native seed infrastructure and restoration supply systems needed to restore ecosystems responsibly and effectively. Through collaboration with conservation partners and restoration practitioners, we aim to help build the plant material supply needed to support ecological restoration across Ontario and beyond.
Examples of completed restoration work:
Over the past 10+ years, we've been fortunate to take part in many exciting projects and opportunities with our clients and partners, like:
1) Habitat restoration for National and Provincial Parks such as Point Pelee National Park, Bruce Peninsula National Park, Rouge Park, and more
2) Supply and services for conservation organizations, including invasive management, site preparation, seeding and planting grasslands, meadows, wetlands, and forests
3) Contract grow projects for cities and municipalities across Ontario, including Toronto, London, Mississauga, Sudbury, & Ottawa
