Our Ethos, Vision & Mission
At St. Williams Ecology Centre, we believe the health of our economies, cultures, and natural environments must co-exist in a sustainable and mutually beneficial way. A future where people and nature thrive together has always been the inspiration behind our work.
Ecological restoration begins with plants, but more fundamentally, it begins with seed. Native seeds carry the genetic adaptations that allow ecosystems to function, adapt, and recover. Protecting this genetic integrity is essential if restoration efforts are to rebuild resilient landscapes rather than simply revegetate disturbed land.

Our work is grounded in a commitment to ecologically appropriate, ethically produced native plants and seed. We believe that restoring ecosystems at meaningful scale requires both scientific rigor and responsible stewardship of native plant genetics.
To guide our work, we prioritize:
- Regionally appropriate native plants and seed that support biodiversity conservation
- Responsible seed collection and production practices that protect wild plant populations
- Traceability and provenance tracking that maintain genetic integrity across the restoration supply chain
- Partnerships with conservation-minded organizations and practitioners who share our commitment to healthy ecosystems
Plants grown and seed produced at our nursery are propagated using ethical and sustainable methods. We adhere to the Native Plant Guidelines for Commercial Native Plant Growers of the North American Native Plant Society and follow Society for Ecological Restoration guidelines for wild seed collection. Our plants are sustainably scaled at our nursery and are guaranteed to be neonicotinoid-free, supporting pollinators and beneficial insects.
Our Vision
We envision a future where ecological restoration operates at the scale required to repair landscapes across Ontario, Canada, and beyond.

As biodiversity loss and climate change accelerate globally, restoration efforts are expanding rapidly. Roads, infrastructure, agricultural transitions, and climate resilience projects are transforming landscapes at unprecedented scales. To restore these landscapes responsibly, restoration practitioners must have access to reliable, regionally adapted native seed systems.
Our vision is to help build a green economy supported by:
- Sustainable, scalable native seed production for reliable access to regionally adapted plant material
- Transparent seed provenance tracking and traceability for successful long-term restoration outcomes
- Strong partnerships and collaboration between restoration practitioners, industry, and conservation organizations
While our work is rooted in Ontario, the principles behind responsible native seed systems—genetic integrity, provenance awareness, and ecological stewardship—are increasingly important worldwide. We are committed to contributing to this growing global movement for restoration grounded in sound ecological science.
Our Mission
Our mission is to scale the production of ecologically appropriate native plants and seed while supporting systems that protect biodiversity and strengthen ecological restoration. We pursue this mission by:
1. Supplying Ecologically Appropriate Native Seed & Plants
Providing high-quality native plants and seed that support biodiversity conservation and ecological restoration across Ontario and beyond.
2. Planning & Scaling Native Seed Production
Expanding our capacity to produce native seed at the volumes required for large-scale restoration and landscape recovery.
3. Supporting Seed Provenance & Traceability
Advancing systems that allow native seed to be tracked from collection site to restoration project, ensuring ecological appropriateness and genetic integrity.
5. Advancing Native Seed Systems
Supporting the development of coordinated seed strategies that strengthen restoration supply chains at provincial, national, and potentially international scales.
6. Educating and Inspiring
Sharing knowledge about the beauty, utility, and ecological importance of indigenous plants and natural systems, helping more people connect with and care for the landscapes around them.
7. Reinvesting in Conservation
Supporting ecological restoration and conservation initiatives by allocating a portion of our profits toward projects that protect and restore natural systems.
A Look Forward
Ecological restoration is entering a new era that will be defined by scale, collaboration, and stewardship of native plant genetics. By strengthening native seed production, improving provenance tracking, and supporting restoration practitioners across the region, we aim to help build the foundation for healthy, resilient ecosystems that will thrive for generations to come. Our goal is to accomplish that both here in Ontario and as part of a broader global restoration movement.
