Restoration Project Services
Restoration Project Services
Our work often spans the full restoration cycle—from native seed collection and propagation through installation and field monitoring—helping ensure that restoration efforts are supported by appropriate plant materials and sound ecological practices.
We combine expertise in native seed systems, plant propagation, and restoration implementation to help establish resilient native plant communities across diverse landscapes. Our team has experience working with over 300 native plant species across a wide range of Ontario habitats, from forests and wetlands to grasslands and coastal systems.
We collaborate with conservation authorities, municipalities, parks, consultants, contractors, and conservation organizations to design and deliver restoration solutions tailored to the ecological conditions and goals of each project.
Site Assessment & Restoration Planning
Successful restoration begins with understanding the ecological conditions of a site. Our team provides site evaluation and restoration planning services to guide project design and plant material selection. Planning services may include:
- Baseline ecological site evaluations
- Vegetation and habitat assessments
- Identification of restoration opportunities and constraints
- Development of restoration strategies and planting plans
- Selection of appropriate native species and seed mixes
These assessments help ensure restoration actions align with site conditions and long-term ecological goals.
Native Seed Mix Design & Supply
Native seed is a foundational component of many restoration projects. We supply ecological restoration seed for projects across Ontario and assist clients in selecting or designing seed mixes appropriate for their sites. Seed mixes can be developed for a range of habitat types including grasslands, meadows, wetlands, shorelines, and forest understories. Our seed services include:
- Standard seed mixes for common restoration applications
- Custom seed mix design tailored to specific site conditions and project goals
- Native seed sourcing through regional collection with support for cleaning, storage, and packaging
- Support for installation with additional services as needed
Native Plant Propagation & Seed Production
Our conservation nursery supports the propagation of a wide range of native trees, shrubs, grasses, and herbaceous plants used in ecological restoration. We also maintain seed production systems that help scale native seed supply for restoration initiatives.
Using nursery and agricultural equipment, we are able to grow and manage plant materials needed for both small restoration sites and large landscape-scale projects. This infrastructure helps strengthen the regional plant material supply needed to support ecological restoration. Our services include:
- Scouting species native to a region and identifying plant specimens
- Seed collection, testing, cleaning, storage, and tracking
- Stratification and propogation of native trees, shrubs, herbaceous perennials, grasses & sedges, and/or aquatic species
- Scaling through field planting, harvesting, and processing
Site Preparation
Proper site preparation is essential for successful establishment of native plants and seed mixes. Our team provides site preparation services designed to create suitable conditions for restoration.
Site preparation may include:
- Clearing and vegetation removal
- Grading and soil preparation, decompaction, scarification, and amendments where necessary
- Preparation of seed beds or planting areas
For challenging landscapes, we utilize remote-controlled equipment and specialized machinery that allows restoration work to be carried out safely in steep or low-access areas while minimizing disturbance to surrounding habitats.
Seeding & Planting
We support restoration implementation through the installation of native seed mixes and the planting of nursery-grown plant material.
Implementation services include:
- Broadcast seeding and drill seeding using specialized restoration seed drills
- Planting of native trees, shrubs, and herbaceous plants
- Installation of restoration plant communities
- Coordination with restoration contractors and project partners
These approaches help establish diverse native plant communities capable of developing into self-sustaining ecosystems.
Technology & Specialized Equipment
To support restoration work across a variety of landscapes, our team utilizes specialized equipment and emerging technologies designed for ecological restoration.
Tools and systems used in our work may include:
- Drone technology for aerial site assessment, mapping, and monitoring
- Remote-controlled machinery for restoration work in steep or difficult-to-access terrain
- Specialized seed drills for efficient installation of restoration seed mixes
- Nursery and agricultural equipment used to scale seed production and plant propagation
These technologies allow restoration work to be completed efficiently while helping reduce site disturbance and improve project outcomes.
Invasive Species Management
Invasive plants can significantly limit restoration success. We provide invasive species management services designed to reduce competition and support the establishment of native vegetation.
Services may include:
• Targeted invasive species removal
• Early detection and control of invasive plants
• Development of invasive management strategies
• Ongoing monitoring and adaptive management
Maintenance & Site Stewardship
Restoration projects often require ongoing management to ensure long-term success. We support post-installation stewardship activities that help guide sites through the establishment phase. These activities help support the development of stable and resilient native plant communities. Maintenance services may include:
- Vegetation monitoring and site assessments
- Irrigation where necessary
- Pest and disease management
- Vegetation management such as mowing
- Prescribed burning where appropriate
Project Management & Coordination
Many restoration projects involve multiple partners and phases of work. Our team can assist with project coordination and implementation planning to support successful project delivery. Project support may include:
- Restoration project planning and coordination
- Budgeting and costing support
- Coordination with consultants, contractors, and project partners
- Scheduling and logistics for restoration activities
Past Restoration Work Across Ontario
St. Williams Nursery & Ecology Centre has contributed to restoration initiatives of grasslands, meadows, wetlands, and forests across Ontario and beyond. By combining native seed systems, plant production infrastructure, restoration expertise, and specialized equipment, we help provide the plant materials and technical support needed to restore ecosystems responsibly and effectively.
Over the past decade, we have had the opportunity to collaborate with many conservation partners, municipalities, and restoration practitioners across Ontario. Examples of our work include:
Past habitat restoration projects for national and provincial parks include Point Pelee National Park, Bruce Peninsula National Park, Rouge National Urban Park, Singing Sands Provincial Park, and more.
Past contract grow programs have supported many cities and municipalities across Ontario including Toronto, London, Mississauga, Sudbury, Ottawa, and beyond.
